Revamped Lal Kuan Crossing
The second phase of the DME project consists of NH 24 widening, under which the construction of a new flyover has already started at Lal Kuan in Ghaziabad. This will completely revamp the Lal Kuan Crossing.
  • The new flyover, 800 metres in length, is expected to be comprising of 14 lanes, having 4 bridges. 
  • As per the NHAI project director, the NH-91 will be widened by around 50 meters, with a view to de-congest traffic at NH 24. 
  • Apart from this, it would be easier for people to descend or ascend the flyover, using the two loops built on either side of the flyover. 
  • The service lanes will be strengthened as well, in order to ease the movement of heavy vehicles. 
  • The flyover will be 12.5 km away from the UP Gate. 
Three Phases Of The Project 
The Delhi Meerut Expressway is divided into three phases or parts - 
  • First phase: Sarai Kale Khan to UP Gate (8.7 Km in length)
  • Second phase: UP Gate to Dasna (about 19 km in length)
  • Third phase: Dasna to Meerut (22.3 km in length)
The second phase is currently in progress, while the third phase is expected to be completed by the year 2020.
Major Issues 
Although the completion date of the project is tentatively said to be May 2019, yet there are some factors, which may hamper the progress. Some potential issues are related to the shifting of the following - 
  • Transmission lines 
  • Electrical distribution lines
  • Ganga water pipeline
